Key Rental - A Car Rental System
This is an individual project for old Generation Z to have a better experience in traveling. Since there are many old Gen Zs who like to rent cars while traveling in other cities and countries, I designed a car rental system, containing a car rental parking device and a car rental app, for users to have more effective and easier car rental experience.
Research
I. Survey
(With Congrui Yuan & Victoria Chen)
Our survey was focus on the Generation Z group, and we gathered 57 responses. Our participants are from different cities and countries. The key words of the survey are navigation tools, travel, transportation modes and cultural differences.
Effective Questions From Survey
In the survey, there were various questions related to their traveling experiences. According to the data analysis, I extracted some questions' answers in the survey so that I can explore more with following interviewers.
Q4: Ranking transportation modes

Q7: What types of navigation you use when you are traveling in the foreign country?
Almost all of the Generation Z participants use the App in their phones for navigation while traveling.

II. Interview
• Focus on old Gen Z’s educational traveling in foreign countries with preferred transportation modes and problems
• 3 participants are all old Gen Zs who like to travel around the world
• I gathered their common transportation modes and problems in order to have a target

“I like to rent a car when I am traveling to a foreign city or country because having a car is more convenient for me to do everything.”
“It is hard to estimate time for renting the car when I am going to traveling. In the rental car, if the car does not support airplay, there is no holder for me to put my phone for GPS.”

Quotes:
“I usually travel with my family, and my parents love to rent a car while traveling, so I usually travel with the rental car.”
“We don’t know how much time we need to rent and return the car. The process is complicated. We always need to capture the flight after returning the renting car.”
III. Problems
Based on the interviews focusing on traveling in foreign countries with preferred transportation modes and problems 3 Gen Z participants have had, car rental process is a common problem that all of them have complaint about it in different aspects:
1. Long waiting time for car rental service
2. Complicated car rental process
3. Hard to find rental car in the car rental parking lot
4. Hard to communicate with server in different first language while traveling in foreign countries
Thesis
How might I create an effective, time-saving and better system of car rental for Gen Z to rent, find and return cars so that Gen Zs can have more fascinating journeys in foreign countries?
Moodboard
I wanted to create a rental car system, which could combine the car rental parking device with car rental App, so that users can rent cars, find rental cars and return cars with this system effectively.

Ideation
Car Rental Parking Smart Key
I decided to design a Car Rental Parking Smart Key, which would be placed in front of each parking spot in the rental car parking lot. The arms of it are rotatable so that the arms can come up to prevent rental cars from stealing.
Car Rental App
The Parking Key is connected with the Car Rental App. The main functions of this App are rental car booking and return, accurate GPS by connecting with the detector on the Parking Key, and the access to the Parking Key and rental car using Face ID in the App.

II. Car Return Process

Prototype
I did the prototype to figure out how the motion of the car rental parking key could be worked, and I can also know the proportion between all the parts of the parking key.

CAD Models
I chose to create a car rental parking key that the arm can slide out and it can lift up 90 degrees. However, the arm looks not robust enough to endure the car's weight. Therefore, I decided to add two side arms to support it and make the whole parking key looks more solid.

Car Rental Parking Key

Yellow LED light turns off after completing the rotation automatically.

LED light of the detector turns off after receiving the mission or finishing the task.

Branding
I chose the colors of greenish blue, gray, and dark navy blue as the theme colors of the brand because these colors have the feeling of technology, which fit dynamic cars.
For the pattern of the logo, I wanted to combine a shape of car, an element from the car rental parking key and a factor from the car rental App together to represent the whole rental car system.

Car shape
Silhouette of car rental parking key
Key to unlock the device and rental car in the App

The name of this car rental system is Key Rental because users need unlock the car rental parking key and also unlock the car key in the App. Thus, key is a significant element in this car rental system.
Key Rental App

1. Rent a car
2. GPS to find the rental car
3. Face ID to unlock the car rental parking key
4. Return a rental car

Key Rental System

User can use Face ID in Key Rental App to unlock the Car Rental Parking Key.

The detector on the Parking Key is connected with Key Rental App to provide accurate GPS.
Scenario 1: After user unlock the car rental parking key by Face ID/passcode in the Key Rental App, the detector would receive the task and then the parking key would go down.

Scenario 2: When the user need to return the rental car, the user needs to lock the car rental parking key by Face ID/passcode in the Key Rental App, and the detector would receive the task so that the parking key would go up.
